At the Environmental Law Centre we envision an Alberta where the environment is a priority. We see a society where environmental concerns guide our choices. We believe that if we make the right choices, future generations will enjoy a clean, healthy and diverse environment protected by strong, effective laws and Albertans will actively and meaningfully engage in environmental decision-making.
Our publications and critiques, web-based tools, and information services put crucial information in the hands of all Albertans who have the power to influence environmental change: community organizations, everyday citizens, corporations, lawyers and policy-makers. These groups turn to us for the information and resources they need to protect their interests.
Our plain language services make the complexity of law and environmental issues accessible for everyone. We speak and act on behalf of those who are unable to do so. Our work means that decision-making will be stronger and more equitable for Albertans.What we’re working to address
Climate and Energy
At the ELC, we understand the importance of both and how they have the ability to shape the future. We are working hard to balance the development of energy resources (i.e. oil, gas, coal) in a way that does not destroy the environment or our quality of life.
Sustainable Communities
Over the past 50 years, however, there has been an increase in the challenges facing Albertans and the place we call home. This has given rise to a rallying call to enshrine the right to a clean and healthy environment in the highest laws of the land.
Nature & Biodiversity
Canada is known for its pristine wilderness and natural areas, amazing flora and fauna, and breathtaking vistas; this is the legacy Canadians treasure and long to enjoy for generations to come. Forests are being stripped, cities are encroaching on rural landscapes, and many species are at risk due to the loss of their natural habitat.As Alberta’s leading environmental public policy and law reform charity, since 1982 the Environmental Law Centre has worked towards advancing Alberta’s environmental laws, promoting cutting-edge legislation and supporting the rights of all Albertans to have a fair say in their future.
