Our Story – Why We Exist
Calgary Humane Society is Calgary’s longest-established animal welfare organization with a proud history of connecting lives and standing up for animals who cannot speak for themselves since 1922. In 100 years, our mission has remained the same: to help as many animals as we can.
We are Calgary’s only open-admission animal shelter, and this means one simple thing: we never say no. We never turn an animal away. When they need us, we respond.
Our mission cannot be accomplished without the support of donors and community members. Since 1922, your support has created tens of thousands of brighter futures. Together, we will continue to help as many animals as we can!
Our Impact – What We Do
In today’s complex and changing world we know that, to help as many animals as we can, we must be more than a shelter. We must also be leaders in education and violence prevention, focused on creating a more compassionate tomorrow. Our emphasis on humane education and community outreach has been part of our Society’s work since 1922, with a special focus on young people.
In addition, by collaborating with experts in inter-partner violence, senior care, and affordable housing, we are able to connect with marginalized communities to ensure that animals in the care of vulnerable populations are never left behind. Our support for these Calgarians and their companion animals is implemented through several of our people-focused programs which reduce barriers to animal care in the realms of urgent medical care, end-of-life measures, or temporary housing.
