Momentum is a change-making organization that combines social and economic strategies to reduce poverty. For over thirty years we have worked with community partners and people across Calgary and the Treaty 7 region to build a more inclusive and thriving local economy.
We’re Putting Income First.
While poverty isn’t only about income, it is always about income. Our current initiatives prioritize income-building strategies to help people exit poverty for good.
Donor Support Fuels our Programming and Policy Initiatives.
To achieve our mission, we use a holistic approach that covers everything from financial literacy, entrepreneurship and skills training, to developing communication skills, building self-confidence, and establishing positive social networks. It’s about more than just creating jobs and starting businesses – it’s about inspiring vibrant communities where everyone plays a role. We also work to influence systems of governments to increase economic inclusion, and advance equity and reconciliation so more people have opportunities to increase their income.
At Momentum, Success Looks Like:
Selam, a newcomer from Ethiopia who, after trying to find a way to break into Canada’s IT field without crippling student debt, forged skills and career confidence through Momentum’s IT Support Specialist Certificate Program and landed a full-time role at a Calgary-based tech company.
Reza, a resilient father who fled decades of danger – including Taliban threats and a harrowing border escape – to find safety in Calgary, where he rebuilt his career as a plumber using Momentum’s Trades Training Program, securing a hopeful future for his family.
Balteen, a young woman who, after her family fled India during unrest and endured financially devastating immigration scams, used the financial knowledge she learned in Momentum’s Youth Savings Program to provide much-needed stability and hope for her family and her future.
