Established in 1961, Deaf & Hear Alberta is a charity that has been breaking down barriers to communication for over 60 years. We are passionate about every person’s right to communication. We envision a society where the hearing population understands, accepts, and embraces the Deaf and hard of hearing. Our programs, services, and education focus on advancing equitable communication everywhere.

Our main activities include: providing in-person, virtual, and virtual on-demand American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting, conducting ASL classes, providing mental health counselling in ASL, conducting programs for Deaf and hard-of-hearing seniors (55+) to support the hearing loss journey and decrease social isolation, providing workplace accommodation plans, and conducting inclusive communication training.  In addition, we have an eStore with various assistive technology and safety devices.

As of 2022, it is estimated that there are 14,000 Deaf individuals and 112,000 who are hard of hearing in Calgary. The Deaf community is a unique cultural group united by common history, stories, and communication in American Sign Language. Hearing loss can occur at any stage of life, with aging and noise exposure being two major factors. The severity of hearing loss may range from mild to profound.  For those who are hard of hearing, verbal communication is typically their primary mode of interaction. We support both of these distinctly different groups through the activities we offer.
