Tyler’s Story:
Tyler is 16 years old with a long history of mental health problems. He has lived in about 20 out-of-home placements. Tyler shows up at Inglewood Opportunity Hub (formerly EXIT Youth Shelter) periodically – not a set routine – but it has been going on for 2 years. He acts like a tough street kid but then sleeps with an offered teddy bear. He often shows up beaten and requiring a hospital trip, too.
Tyler found comfort and safety at our shelter. That is what he wrote on his feedback form every time he stayed. He liked the fact that no one “pressured him” to change. He didn’t much like answering questions about his family, but he liked food and games played at night. After about 25 random visits, he started coming every night and talking to one particular staff who got him to agree to at least take a look at a supported living placement. He was successful at receiving a placement and he still lives there today.
Wood’s Homes provides treatment and support for children, youth and families with mental health needs. Wood’s Homes is a place where children and families can turn to for help when they feel they have nowhere else to turn. Wood’s Homes provides 40+ programs and services to more than 20,000 children, youth and their families every year, ranging from one-time, walk-in counselling sessions to live-in treatment programs.
