For over 50 years, the Cochrane Ecological Institute (CEI) has been devoted to the preservation and conservation of cultural and biological diversity through education; the reintroduction of extirpated flora and fauna; rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured and orphaned wildlife; monitoring and research. This work has never been more important with current species decline and extinction, biodiversity loses, and climate change. CEI is creating a new education program called ‘Going Batty’ to help save bats as their numbers are declining rapidly. After completing baseline research into bat activity in different biomes on CEIs property in 2022, we hope to expand our research to four locations in the Town of Cochrane for 2023. We realize that the best way to preserve biodiversity of species is to educate people on how they can be an ally for wildlife. So, our project will engage Cochrane schools and organizations to dispel the mysteries of bats and focus on the essential role they play in our ecosystem. Students will learn both in the classroom and in the field about bats and how we can protect them. A Cochrane High School will build colony bat boxes for their habitat and nursery, bringing the project full circle.
