At Scientists in School, we believe it is imperative for every child in Canada regardless of gender, race, achievement in school, or socioeconomic background to be actively engaged in the seeing, doing and understanding of science. Over the last 33 years, we have inspired over 10 million children and youth!

Science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) influence almost every aspect of our lives. Perhaps more importantly, the skills STEM teaches – thinking critically, analyzing information, creating solutions, evaluating outcomes and disseminating results – are transferable across many fields. STEM literacy prepares children for a future we cannot predict or imagine. It empowers them to adapt and innovate, make their own opportunities, and advance and prosper in well-paid careers, while supporting Canada’s increasingly knowledge-based economy.

Scientists in School’s hands-on experiential classroom and community setting workshops help elementary-aged children hone their STEM skills while exploring disciplines from astronomy to physics to zoology. Led by our expert presenters, each child investigates forces like gravity, magnetism and friction, properties of different substances such as solubility, absorption and density, and how dominant and recessive genes combine to create the wonder that is us, and so much more! As they build roller-coasters, examine wetland habitats, create balancing birds and construct suspension bridges, our scientist-presenters encourage them to ask questions, propose hypotheses, make observations and share their discoveries with their peers.

Children become active participants in the scientific process, and begin to see themselves as tomorrow’s scientists, engineers and explorers. They begin to see their own potential, envision themselves in exciting careers they may not previously have considered, and start to develop the confidence to embark on their own STEM journeys of discovery.

Your donation will help us to:

  • Remove barriers to STEM education for children in low-income, racialized, rural, remote and other under-resourced communities
  • Encourage girls to pursue STEM education and careers
  • Provide hands-on learning opportunities to close the gaps in STEM education and academic performance widened by the pandemic.

Beyond keeping workshop fees affordable for as many as possible, you will help us offer free workshops to schools and community organizations that aren’t able to afford even our subsidized fee.

Together we will empower children and youth to envision a future or career in STEM, succeed in a knowledge-based workforce, be active participants in Canada’s economic success, and make informed contributions to addressing current and future societal issues.
