Luminous Voices Music Society

Luminous Voices is about to launch its seventh season.

Our seasonal concerts attract 300-500 visitors on average and our joint performance with The Tallis Scholars, renowned UK choir that was established in 1973, drew a crowd of 530 people. The concert received amazing reviews from Stephan Bonfield of Calgary Herald and stood close to “the event of a year” for Calgary choral community.

COOPERATION WITH CPO:

The professional level of performance has been recognized by The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra who has engaged Luminous Voices three times for performances. The first was the inaugural concert in November 2012. The second was a blockbuster performance combining Luminous Voices with Edmonton’s Pro Coro Canada. The third was a performance combining Luminous Voices with The Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and organist Neil Cockburn in May 2018. Next concert with The Calgary Philharmonic Chorus and Inuk throat singer Tanya Tagaq will take place in April 2019.

RECORDINGS:

Mendelssohn’s Te Deum (2015) is the Winner of the 2016 Choral Canada award for Outstanding Choral Recording AND Zachary Wadsworth’s ‘The Far West’ is the winner of the 2016 Choral Canada award for Outstanding Choral Composition AND the winner of the 2018 National Choral Award for Outstanding Choral Recording by Choral Canada. Two more recordings are underway: Artem Vedel’s Ukrainian Concertos and Peter Togni’s ‘Sea Dreams’.

YOUTH&EDUCATION:

We provide free workshops and teachings. Our director, Timothy Shantz is an active member in the choral community, giving dozens of clinics each season with children, youth & adults. Last season he conducted tenors and basses from over 9 local high schools in a performance at the Jack Singer Concert Hall and he has also done workshops with, William Aberhardt High School Choir, Western Canada High School Choir, Bishop Carroll High School as well as Mount Royal Kantorei, The Foothills Philharmonic, the Medicine Hat Kiwanis Music Festival, and two workshops with groups in Vancouver & Whistler.

UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES

We have been a part of SunLife Arts&Culture Pass for several years. Through this program, we offer 36 tickets per concert to underserved communities in Calgary which helps over 100 people each season. The redemption rate is between 85-100% for each concert and the value is $3,960. Here is a feedback by some of concert attendees:

“It was the first time in years I’ve been able to take my son anywhere and we both had a fantastic time.  I was so appreciative for the tickets and I like to extend my gratitude to those responsible for not making the tickets stand out as low income.”

“Being on the Fair Entry Program is wonderful for Low-Income Seniors.  Thank you for Sun Life program for your generosity for us to enjoy some arts and culture! Love this service!”

Our programming includes 3-4 self-produced concerts per season. We have moved all concerts to The Bella Concert Hall at Taylor Centre for The Performing Arts.

We have earned an irreplaceable spot in the choral community in Calgary and beyond:

“After five seasons before the Calgary public, Luminous Voices is now an established choral ensemble, with an enviable track record of prizes, CDs, and, most important, a series of outstanding live performances. Their contribution and importance to the increasingly sophisticated classical music scene in the city can hardly be overstated (…) Luminous Voices will be something Calgarians can perpetually lean on.”
Kenneth DeLong, Calgary Herald, 2016
