In 1999 the series began with three small Sunday afternoon concerts. Last year in our 20th Anniversary season, we presented 5 concerts including a full performance of Handel’s Messiah and a solo concert by one of the world’s most renowned counter-tenors, Andreas Scholl. Our mandate includes creating opportunities for Calgary-based musicians and we were proud to present a brand new local early music ensemble last season — the String Theory Music Collective. Alberta’s period-instrument ensemble Rosa Barocca, clear evidence of the growth of early music energy in our city, figured prominently in our last season and will again in the upcoming season. They are key partners in our major community outreach and educational project — the VoiceScapes Sing Along Messiah. This event offers auditioned young singers the opportunity to perform the solos with a baroque orchestra and brings together the Calgary singing community to raise the roof of Knox United Church in the choruses. Our primary project is a series of early music concerts presented in the warm, inviting venue of Christ Church Elbow Park. Each year agents and ensembles contact us in the hopes of coming to Calgary on their Canadian or US tours. We also approach local artists to be a part of concerts we plan and program which is a major contribution to the early music scene in our city. Along with the Sing Along Messiah, we create educational opportunities around concert times: for the community (including our pre-concert talks and workshop opportunities) or for young artists (bringing artists into schools for coaching, talks and masterclasses.)Ever since our modest beginning in 1999 when we presented three afternoon concerts of early music in Calgary, the Early Music Concert Series has been thriving in Calgary. What began as an opportunity for friends to come together to make music in our city, has grown to be a major Canadian venue for early music performance.
Of course, we can only do these things with support from our generous donors, along with support from various granting organizations and ticket sales. These three pillars make professional music performance possible.
