As one of the Five Pillars of Islam, zakat is a religious obligation for all Muslims who meet the necessary criteria of wealth. It is a mandatory charitable contribution, often considered to be a tax, that is later distributed back to the community by us, to families struggling to make ends meet.
WeCare’s financial assistance program has served more than 500 low-income families in Calgary.
What we help with:
Our Social Services include:
And upcoming Social Programs include:
Our Financial assistance program has received a lot of demand in the past couple of years, especially with the lack of similar programs in Calgary.
Our team welcomes families with open arms and takes the time to get to know them and their situation, in order to fully understand how we can help, either with assisting them with food, rental support or medication.
We have seen many families that benefited from our program continue with their lives and came back to donate to the program, allowing us to assist more families that go through similar situations as them.
Our Social Services include:
In 2018, we set up 3 food pantries in 3 quadrants of the city, all in easy accessible community buildings, where people are free to pick up the food they need with no questions asked. We fill up the pantries on a weekly basis, we have a lot of dedicated community members that assist with purchasing non-perishable food items and stock up the pantry.
At least 3 times a year, we conduct city-wide food hamper drives, where we deliver hampers to over 150 families. This is a great initiative to include a huge number of community members that want to give back to the community.
In collaboration with the Government of Alberta, our Anti-Racism Project aims to raise awareness regarding Racism and Islamophobia, and how to deal with it in our community. Part of the project is our booklet “Religion, Racism & Rights”
Upcoming Social Programs:

Launching in 2019, our Senior programs include a council of community seniors, working together to conduct workshops, activity classes directed toward seniors in our community.
In 2019 we will be conducting workshops in collaboration with Child Services, to inform community members regarding the process of adoption in Calgary in an attempt to lower orphan rates, and increase adoption rates in our community. What can you do?
