McDougall Stoney Mission Society

Our core work focuses on two areas.  First, management of the historic site includes maintenance, events for the general public, and fundraising to restore the iconic historic McDougall Memorial United Church.  We are also actively working with the Stoney Nakoda Nation to develop a new interpretive walk that will better tell the stories of the Stoney Nakoda people side-by-side with the stories of the settlers, in their own language.  Approximately 1000 individuals from around the world visit the site each year to learn the early history of Southern Alberta.  Prior to the fire, the church was a popular site for weddings, and this will begin again once the church is restored in September 2020.

The second area of focus is working with the Stoney Nakoda Nation in various capacities to provide charitable works and develop projects in which we can work together for the betterment of all.  An example is the annual Christmas Feast that our society holds in Morley.  In 2019 we served over 350 people from the Stoney Nakoda Nation a delicious Christmas Feast, and provided gifts for over 200 children. There are many programs available in our two core focus areas:

Site-Specific Programs

  • Fundraising to restore the McDougall Memorial United Church and develop the new interpretive walk.
  • Events at the site to increase tourism activity in the area.
  • Guides at the site to explain the historical importance of the site and the Stoney Nakoda Nation

Programs for the Stoney Nakoda Nation

  • Annual Christmas Feast
  • Providing jobs for local Stoney Nakoda Youth
  • Providing meals for the Stoney Nakoda Nation as needed
  • Developing future projects as necessary (one example is that we are actively engaging with Stoney Nakoda artists to provide a range of artwork to place in the restored church later this year).

As our priorities change frequently throughout the year, the best way to help is to contact our society at [email protected] and we’ll find a spot for you!

Our greatest needs right now include:

  • Volunteers for events at the site
  • Volunteers for charitable activities with the Stoney Nakoda Nation
  • Volunteers to assist with fundraising for all of our activities.
  • Volunteers to assist with maintenance at the site.
