Honouring the Black History Month: “Black Excellence: A Heritage to Celebrate, a Future to Build”

Join us to celebrate and learn about the great contributions and accomplishment of local Black community from our distinguished guests, passionate and inspiring activists:

Dr. David Este, Professor Emeritus at the University of Calgary, the 2022 recipient of Grant MacEwan Lifetime Achievement Award for his ground-breaking academic and advocacy work on racism and anti-Black racism. He is one of the authors of the film, We are the Roots: Black Settlers and Their Experiences of Discrimination on the Canadian Prairies, which received numerous awards, shown on prestigious festivals.

Sabrina Naz Comănescu, a leading dancer and choreographer with Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, and the major force behind The Diversity Performing Arts Club of Calgary that celebrates cultural diversity while promoting inclusion and respect for all youth. Through a fusionist lens, Sabrina’s work manifests in dance, fashion, photography, and film in the nation’s artistic landscape.
