Our work

At Calgary Seniors, we believe every older adult deserves to age with dignity, connection, and support.

Many seniors in our community face complex barriers, such as rising costs, limited mobility, health concerns, and social isolation. What might seem like everyday tasks, like getting groceries or attending appointments, can become overwhelming without support. Too often, these challenges remain unseen, quietly shaping daily life behind closed doors. And yet, with the right help, these same moments can become opportunities for connection, care, and renewed confidence.

We provide a wide range of programs and services designed to meet seniors where they’re at by offering practical help, compassionate connection, and tailored support when it’s needed most. And as more people begin to understand what that support really looks like, something meaningful is happening: awareness is spreading, and more of our community is starting to take notice. Caring for seniors in community is building momentum – one rooted in kindness, generosity, and showing up for one another.

One of the ways we do this is through our Shopping Companion program. This initiative pairs seniors with trusted volunteers who assist with grocery shopping on a regular basis. But the impact goes far beyond groceries. These ongoing relationships help reduce isolation, improve mental health, and restore a sense of independence. What starts as a simple errand often becomes something much deeper—connection, trust, and friendship.

Right now, 274 seniors are waiting to be matched with a Shopping Companion volunteer. While they wait, we do everything we can to support them—whether it’s through urgent food hampers, short-term grocery delivery, or other wraparound services. We ensure no one is left without care or connection.

But we can’t do it alone.

With more volunteers and community support, we can reduce waitlists, expand our reach, and ensure every senior in Calgary has access to the care, resources, and connection they deserve. More and more, people are learning the secret of this kind of support: small acts of kindness can transform someone’s entire day, even their sense of belonging.

“My volunteer was sent from heaven. He didn’t let me lift a darn thing, and he is very polite and fun to chat with. He is wonderful. When my dad wasn’t feeling well at Costco, he found a chair for him. At first, he offered for me to stay with my dad while he picked up all the items, but when I said I preferred to check things myself, he decided to stay with my dad to keep him company. Can you imagine? He is such a caring person. He even helped us unpack all the groceries when we got home. He’s the best, and I can't express how lucky we are to find such wonderful people through Calgary Seniors.” – Shopping Companion Client
