Our work
The Somali Youth League Society (SYLS) in Calgary, Alberta first started with a simple goal: to support Somali youth and their families in the community. When the organization was founded in 2010, the focus was on helping Somali young people find positive opportunities through education, mentorship, sports, and community programs. Many families were new to Canada and needed support, guidance, and a safe environment where youth could grow, stay connected to their culture, and build confidence for their future.
Over time, while working closely with Somali youth, we began to notice that many other young people from African and different ethnic backgrounds were facing similar struggles. Some were dealing with challenges at school, lack of support systems, or were at risk of falling into negative environments on the streets. As we saw these needs in the wider community, it became clear that the support and programs we were offering could benefit more youth beyond just the Somali community.
Because of this, SYLS gradually expanded its services to welcome African youth and other ethnic communities who were looking for guidance, mentorship, and positive activities. Our goal remained the same—to help young people stay on the right path, build confidence, and reach their full potential—but our doors became open to a wider community of youth and families who needed support.
Today, SYLS continues to provide education support, tutoring, mentorship, cultural activities, and sports programs such as soccer and after-school activities. These programs give youth a safe and structured place to learn teamwork, leadership, and discipline while staying active and connected with positive role models.
While the organization began with a focus on Somali youth, it has grown into a community organization that now supports Somali, African, and other ethnic youth and their families in Calgary. By expanding our services, SYLS hopes to continue building stronger communities, helping youth avoid negative influences, and creating opportunities that empower the next generation to succeed.
