We envision a world where Low-Income Seniors have a kinship that prospers with a sense of belonging. We found in the real world however, poverty is not confined to only money – there is poverty of spirit, mind and affection. Too often Low-Income Seniors are lonely, depressed – easy prey for debilitating mental and health-related challenges – they don’t take their medications for dementia, bi-polar, etc. This can often be a burden on themselves, their families and our health system. As we were seeing this, we had to do something!
Therefore, we co-created Canadian Seniors Foundation Ltd. based out of Calgary. With our uplifting and positive Life Science Programs, we empower our fellow Low-Income Seniors to live a life of dignity. We’ve done this through learning workshops and fun presentations.
Within our own subsidized apartment building we host Wednesday night Bingo. It’s a fun event for getting out of apartments and socializing in the common room. We tell jokes and of course, winning the $20 Jackpot is tantamount to big-bucks! It helps immigrants learn English numbers and keeps our little committee of five making posters and deciding on ways to improve.
That said, there are other areas we need to address. Our Save A Senior’s Life Basic First Aid class teaches about Heart Attacks and Strokes, External Bleeding, the Recovery Position and even how to properly call Emergency 911. This one is for Seniors AND family members.
Then there’s our healthy, happy workshop – Laughter is the Best Medicine. Laughter has been extensively researched for its many health benefits. It de-stresses and brings oxygen to the body and assists in healing. The success is when participants go home and practice gut laughing, building endorphins for weeks.
Many of our neighbourhood Low-Income Seniors use cell phones, some even computers. Our You Can’T Scam Me! workshop focuses on what frauds exist and how to avoid them. Super important!
Our other classes are:
* Abuse and Bullying
* Move, Move, Move seated exercises
* Healthy Eating
All of these classes are free to participants. We only ask for donations. And because a majority of Low-Income Seniors have no vehicles, or physically cannot attend other centres, we take these vital classes to them – to each subsidized building in town! This is what is going to improve WELL-BEING – from the inside out!
We are paying for all mileage, and office necessities with our own pension money. But. we are grateful for the opportunity to propose this project through the Canadian Seniors Foundation, and we hope to receive your support in making this initiative a reality.
