Our vision is to see healthy mothers and babies living in community and our mission is to provide housing and support for pregnant women and youth experiencing or at risk of homelessness; empowering them to move out of vulnerability and into a healthy and sustainable life for them and their child.

At Emma House, expectant mothers are welcomed into a safe, supportive, loving, family-like environment – one in which they encouraged to make the most of their present and to plan for the future. Each woman receives her own bedroom, case management support, access to nutritional meals, security, and 24/hour trauma-informed care.

Since 1992 Emma House has provided housing and support for over 200 pregnant women and youth facing homelessness. By providing a continuum of care and personal development opportunities for women (and their children) during and after pregnancy, we encourage and empower mothers to move out of a life of vulnerability and into a life of self-worth and good health.

“Because of my past my life will not be the phrase ‘living the dream’ for a while, but thanks to Emma House, it is possible.” – Former Emma House Resident

Emma House residents often face many obstacles such as poverty, trauma, lack of life skills, addictions, mental illness, and insufficient community or relational supports that hamper their ability to stop the cycle of homelessness repeating for them and their baby. We aim to address these obstacles by equipping our residents with the resources and capabilities needed to be successful.
We do this by offering individualized and person-centered life skills programming for each resident that includes the following classes and supports:

  • Ages and Stages child development assessments and support
  • Positive parenting classes
  • Financial literacy and money management courses
  • Prenatal and postpartum education
  • Nutrition
  • Self-esteem and development of healthy coping mechanisms
  • Understanding healthy relationships and boundaries
  • Increased healthy social supports through Mentoring Moms Program
  • Time/task management courses
  • Resume/Cover letter building

Using a strength-based approach, we hope to instill confidence into the program participants by helping them identify their strengths and then encouraging them to use those strengths in their daily lives. Our vision for our programs is to see participants develop the skills and capabilities needed to cope with stresses, build healthy relationships, be prepared for motherhood, and move towards becoming healthy, mothers living in community. We rely on the generosity of individuals, organizations, businesses, corporations, and churches to support our programs and help move women and their children from surviving to thriving. All donations are gratefully received, and tax receipts are issued for financials gifts of $20 or higher and are sent out once a year.

VOLUNTEER

Emma House welcomes volunteers who have a desire to give back and see the cycle of homelessness cease in Calgary. We are driven by our mission of seeing healthy mothers and babies in community, and have ambitious goals that can only be achieved by working with others.

Together, staff and volunteers teach beneficial life, nutritional, and parenting skills to empower residents and their babies. We host individuals and groups that want to give back through house and property maintenance, cleaning, meal making, relationship building, and special skills and projects.

Email [email protected] for all volunteer inquiries.

INTERN

Interns are empowered by a supportive team to consistently see positive changes in the circumstances that surround them. Intern positions are life-changing for both the residents of Emma House and the interns themselves, as this program has been designed to grow and mature every individual who graduates it.
