Franciscan and Friends is primarily focused on the needs of Indigenous people in Calgary and Area, including urban and rural, Treaty and non-Treaty communities. Indigenous people in Canada experience low levels of education and income, high rates of unemployment, 8 times the average rate of incarceration and poor health. Over one million, including 73% of youth, seek to alleviate their pain with drugs and alcohol. The cause of death due to alcohol use is 43.7 per 100,000 in the Aboriginal population, double the average rate. Aboriginal youth die by suicide five times more often than other youth in Canada.
