NAM is an acronym for Northeast Addiction and Mental Health, but it has a deeper meaning too. The sound (pronounced “Naam”) means “identity” and is the root sound for “name”. We all have an authentic identity. We can see it in children and it is wonderful to behold. Our concept of who we are becomes hazy as we interact with the external environment – through our parents, families, events, and circumstances. The combination of our genetics and our specific circumstances results in dysfunctional thinking patterns that support expectations of ourselves that are not real. The what, when, and how of this results in the various manifestations of mental illness, addiction, and chronic pain. What would have been a minor disability becomes a major one. What would have been an overcomable obstacle becomes paralyzing. Pain that was bearable now becomes unbearable.
At NAM, we provide coaching towards holistic wellness so that you may discover your authentic self.
Why this matters:
Since 2018, NAM has been a lifeline for many in Calgary, particularly for South Asian community members who have nowhere else to turn. We are the only licensed addiction treatment provider in Alberta that specializes in culturally competent care for South Asians. Our approach works: 55% to 70% of those we serve achieve sobriety within 12 months, depending on the type of addiction. These aren’t just numbers; they represent individuals, families, and futures saved from the grip of addiction.
We’ve been able to operate up until now thanks to grant funding from various government levels, but unfortunately, it is not always enough and in order to grow our services and reach we need to involvement of the community at large to help support us.
What we need:
Ongoing financial, volunteer, and resources support.
Why your help matters:
This funding will allow us to provide care to 400 individuals struggling with addiction and offer support to 720 family members in 2025 alone. Imagine the ripple effect this could have—changing lives, rebuilding families, and offering a second chance to those who need it most.
How you can help:
Please consider donating NAM today. Even a small contribution can help us bridge the gap. Together, we can ensure NAM continues its Seva—selfless service—within our community, helping people overcome addiction and find hope again.
